It is evident from the table that there are in fact fewer individuals with mobility impairments, which is a common misconception. In fact, the majority of people with disabilities tend to be in areas such as hearing impairments or Arthritis. All though, an important area that is often overlooked by employers and service providers are people with learning difficulties and mental health impairments, due to the stigma and ignorance of such disabilities. The lack of understanding in these areas only helps to alienate employees and customers alike, who not only are vital as consumers but also as valuable assets to businesses as employees.
According to the Population Census, there are approximately 16 million people living in Britain. By 2010 the numbers of disabled people in Brtain will increase by 40%. This is quite a significant uplift and will probably have an impact on your business.
