Access Audits

We provide detailed access audits and reports. These are :
  • The first logical step in highlighting issues regarding accessibility
  • Highlights the necessary physical adjustments that need to be made
  • Provide strategic advice and planning on all access issues
  • Sets out a reasonable action plan for future compliance in both the short and long term.
Access Statements

An access statement : * will form part of a legal defense * demonstrates how a service providers have considered accessibility in terms of obligations of 'reasonable provision' placed on them by the DDA The benefits of having an access statement (apart from protection against litigation):

Accessibility

The Access Statement offers an additional opportunity to improve quality of buildings and spaces. By considering the proposed use of the building, who will use it and how it will be managed in terms of the needs of its users, the Statement assists in achieving the highest quality outcome for everyone.

Increased consideration of the needs of the customers, clients and employees, who will eventually be (or already are) using the completed environment, can bring particular advantages for businesses. It assists in providing a higher quality of customer experience and expands the potential customer or employee base. For example, a restaurant that does not take into account the needs of disabled customers will loose not just the income from one potential customer, but also the income from the family, friends or colleagues who would have accompanied them.

Efficiency

The preparation of an Access Statement will assist in highlighting at an early stage, those issues on access to and use of an environment. For new builds, the developer and the designer can reduce the risk of potential costly alterations to introduce accessibility or to address unforeseen problems in the building or space.

The information contained within the Access Statement is also of particular interest to local authorities when they consider applications for approvals under planning and building regulations. An Access Statement should assist in ensuring the time spent on considering such applications is kept to a minimum.

Social Inclusion and Diversity

It is clearly more appropriate in modern society to ensure that those groups of people who have been traditionally excluded from many activities and opportunities, are now included.

This approach offers everyone an opportunity to participate in education, employment and the use of goods, facilities and services. A well-designed and managed environment will allow people to maximise their abilities when doing so. For many, in both the public and private sectors, there will be major social and economic benefits from adopting an inclusive approach.

The Access Statement process assists in including the needs of a greater range of people at those stages where consultation is crucial. It will also ensure that the actual needs of disabled and non-disabled users are accommodated in the design and management of the environment.

Disability Policies

A Disability Policy is a very important document. All service providers need a written protocol, on the management of disabled customers, so as to comply with the Acts proactive clauses and to assist with legal defenses. This document will be requested by solicitors , along with an access statement, when a case of discrimination is alleged.

Benefits: Legal protection and demonstrates pro-activeness in complying with the Disability Discrimination Act.

Training

The Disability Consultancy offers ASET Accredited training packages which cover disability awareness.
An important issue for any organisation is how their staff indirectly or directly liaise with disabled people. Your premises could be fully accessible, but if you or a member of your staff use discriminatory language towards a disabled person you are placing yourself and the company at risk of being prosecuted.

Website Accessibility

When it comes to complying with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, the accessibility of Websites is often overlooked. If an individual with a visual impairment is unable to access a service providers website, then that service provider is discriminating that individual through "barriers to service".

We offer a unique website accessibility service which transforms websites into an accessible website / service for people with visual impairments as well as people with manual dexterity impairments. We try to make websites conform to the accessibility guidelines laid down by the World Wide Web Consortium.

Minimum Compliance Pack for Small Businesses

This is the ideal compromise for small service providers when it comes to DDA compliance. The pack contains: Self-Completion Access Audit, one of our ASET Accredited Training Booklets, a Customer Care Kit and a Signage Pack.

Advice on Corporate Communications

Our Corporate Communications Service addresses the accessibility of any form of literature (whether in electronic or paper form) that a company may distribute. This area of compliance is often seen as a low priority, however if literature in any form is inaccessible, it is discriminating the individuals it is inaccessible to.

The Disability Consultancy offers a Literature Audit which highlights the areas of inaccessibility for individuals with visual impairments in a report format.
